Metal Block
So called metal blocks or sandwich mountings are robust, elastic damping elements used in the bogies of railway vehicles as motion limiters and buffer stops. They consist of a solid elastomer body that is firmly bonded to one or more metal inserts. This vulcanized bond ensures that the components can withstand high operating loads while providing the elasticity and damping required for railway technology.
Area of application
Metal blocks made form rubber and metal are used in the bogies of railway vehicles to limit relative movement between the bogie frame, the wheel set and the car body. They serve as elastic stops that prevent rigid metal components from colliding with one another during vertical, lateral or longitudinal movements. In this way, they protect the bogie from overloads and contribute significantly to the running stability, safety and smoothness of a railway vehicle. Rubber-metal components are commonly used in bogies to dampen shocks, vibrations and movements.
Technical details
The so called metal blocks consist of an elastic rubber body that is firmly vulcanized to metal inserts or steel plates. This composite construction enables durable force transmission and ensures that the components can withstand high dynamic loads. In the bogie, metal blocks dampen radial, axial and vertical forces. They are part of the bogie´s comprehensive vibration and damping system. Thanks to the elastic properties of the rubber, the elements can absorb shocks, limit movements and simultaneously isolate vibrations. The combination of rubber and metal enables a robust, maintenance-free design.
Characteristics
Metal blocks offer high energy absorption and effective vibration and shock damping as the internal friction of the elastomer significantly reduces vibrations. They are weather- and temperature-resistant, resistant to dirt and have a long service life - ideal conditions for use in the undercarriage. They are maintenance-free, helping to reduce downtime and increase vehicle availability. The elastic nature of the material helps protect adjacent components from damage and minimizes structural wear on the bogie.
