Combined Primary Spring System

The combined primary spring system is a compact assembly consisting of various components, such as a coil spring, spring washer and elastic bushing. It provides load-bearing, low-vibration support and stable shaft guidance. Thanks to the specific design of the individual components and their interaction as a system, it meets the special requirements regarding performance characteristics and installation space.

Area of application

The combined compact primary spring system is designed to safely absorb the forces generated in the bogies while ensuring a smooth ride. It combines a load-bearing coil spring made of high-strength spring steel with a spring washer to provide defined preload and uniform force transmission. The assembly is complemented by an elastic rubber-metal bushing that absorbs lateral and longitudinal forces and allows for elastic relative movement between the axle bearing and the bogie frame. While the coil spring bears the majority of the vertical loads, the elastomeric elements provide damping and guidance in the horizontal direction, thereby reducing vibrations and high-frequency excitations and compensating for manufacturing tolerances. This compact design is particularly suitable for running bogies with loose wheel sets and low-mounted portal axles, as only limited installation space is available in these applications. The coordinated interaction of the components enables a robust, space-saving and comfort-oriented primary suspension system.

Technical details

The combinedt primary spring system combines a high-load-capacity coil spring with a complementary spring washer and an elastic bushing to transfer the forces occurring in the wheel set area to the bogie frame in a controlled manner. The coil spring performs the actual spring work and supports the vehicle’s vertical loads, while the spring washer ensures stable preload and optimizes force distribution in the spring mount. In addition, the elastic bushing enables a flexible, vibration-damping connection that elastically absorbs both transverse and longitudinal forces and effectively reduces high-frequency track-induced vibrations. This combination of metallic spring force and elastomeric damping creates a system that, despite its low installation height, provides reliable axle support and a noticeable improvement in ride comfort. Especially for low-floor bogies with portal axles positioned low due to space constraints, this design provides a compact yet robust solution that effectively combines axle guidance, suspension comfort, and vibration isolation.

Characteristics

The combined primary spring system sets the standard for efficiency and comfort. It combines powerful, high-load-capacity suspension with precise damping, ensuring a particularly smooth and stable ride. The carefully balanced combination of metallic spring force and elastomeric vibration isolation significantly reduces track irregularities, which not only enhances ride comfort but also noticeably reduces wear on the undercarriage and infrastructure. Its space-saving design allows for installation even in very compact low-floor bogies with limited installation space - such as those used in modern multi-system vehicles - thereby offering operators a durable, reliable, and low-maintenance solution for demanding operating conditions.
