Hollow spring
A hollow spring is an elastic molded rubber part with an internal cavity. It is used to absorb and transmit forces, as well as to isolate vibrations and shocks. The geometry of the cavities allows the spring characteristic curve to be specifically tailored. Hollow springs are primarily used in mechanical systems that require a defined, permanently elastic deformation and restoring force.
Area of application
A hollow spring is used wherever elastic mounting and vibration isolation are required. In screening and conveying technology, they provide elastic support for assemblies and reduce vibration transmission to load-bearing structures, facilitate controlled motion and protect adjacent components from load spikes. Hollow springs are also used in general machinery and plant engineering, in material handling and logistics applications, in packaging and process plants and in testing and measurement technology. In these applications, they help reduce vibrations, decouple components and minimize noise. Depending on the design, the hollow spring can absorb static and dynamic loads, enable defined reciprocating motions, and increase operational safety. Selection is typically based on the load level, the direction of motion, the available installation space and the respective environmental conditions.
Technical details
Hollow springs can have linear to progressive spring characteristics and are suitable for dynamic loading, such as that encountered in screening machines. Depending on the specific design, the hollow construction can result in a more favorable stress distribution and thus a longer service life under dynamic loading. In a rubber hollow spring, heat is generated during dynamic loading. This is caused by the material’s internal friction (hysteresis). The material’s damping properties and its ability to dissipate heat are key factors in determining the component’s service life and load-bearing capacity.
Characteristics
Hollow springs are characterized by linear to progressively adjustable spring characteristics, high resilience and good elasticity. They operate quietly, are resistant to numerous environmental influences and can be operated maintenance-free without lubrication. Due to their load-dependent deformation, they are capable of effectively absorbing shocks, vibrations and cyclic loads. The choice of elastomer material has a significant influence on the durability, temperature behavior and service life of the hollow spring.
