Wheel Set Axle Protector (MERP)

The MERP (Mountable Elastomer Wheel Set Axle Protector) is a specially developed protection system for the axles of railway vehicles. It is designed to reliably protect the sensitive wheel shaft from stone chips, flying ballast, chunks of ice and other external impacts that can occur during rail operations.

Area of application

The MERP wheel set axle protector is primarily used in railway vehicles that are exposed to high levels of ballast impact and the risk of collision with chunks of ice. It is used in vehicles that operate on high-speed routes. In such environments, the wheel axle can be subjected to particularly high stress. In addition, the MERP is suitable for vehicles in which the wheel axle is structurally exposed and therefore requires additional protection against external influences.

Technical details

The MERP wheel set shaft guard consists of two half-shells vulcanized into a special elastomer, which are joined to form a tubular housing. This gives the MERP the high level of robustness required. The ends feature flared sections that allow for connection to wheel hubs or disc brakes. This design principle is consistent with the typical rubber-metal protection systems of the GMT Group, which specializes in vibration and protection technology.

Characteristics

The MERP wheel set axle protector performs several key functions in protecting the wheel shaft. It provides effective impact protection against foreign objects, thereby reducing wear and surface damage to safety-critical components. At the same time, it enhances operational safety by reliably protecting the wheel shaft from external influences. Installation is particularly simple because the system is simply placed directly around the wheel shaft and then secured with screws. The MERP is maintenance-free and replaces the conventional wheel shaft coating, which must be laboriously removed and then reapplied for maintenance purposes.
