Buffers used as fasteners are elastomer-based machine components with integrated metal connectors. They are used to limit travel, dampen shocks and vibrations and decouple assemblies. Through the combination of spring action and mechanical connection, forces are absorbed, movements are limited to a defined extent and structures and components are protected from overload, vibration and noise.
Area of application
Elastomeric mounting elements or fasteners made from rubber and metal used in general machinery and plant engineering, in material handling and transportation, on equipment such as fans, compressors, pumps and drives, as end stops on rails, chutes or anchor points, as equipment feet, as transport restraints and for vibration isolation of measurement and control enclosures. They are suitable for both static and dynamic load conditions as well as for recurring shock loads, such as when striking stops or absorbing short impulses in cyclic operation.
Technical details
Structurally, the buffers or fasteners consist of an elastomer body and metal parts attached to one or both sides. Geometries are typically cylindrical, conical or parabolic; connection options range from external threads on both ends to combinations of internal and external threads, as well as mounting flanges. The choice of material determines temperature and media resistance. For design purposes, relevant factors include permissible loads in the axial and radial directions, static and dynamic spring stiffness, damping ratio, permissible compression/stroke, as well as settlement and aging behavior. Additional features such as shear protection, protective screens, stop limits or special surface finishes can enhance operational safety.
Characteristics
Rubber-to-metal bonded buffers and fasteners are compact, low-maintenance solutions for reducing shocks, vibrations and noise. They protect components, extend machine service life and can be designed with a defined force-displacement characteristic. A distinction is made between stiffness-rated products with precisely defined spring stiffness and Shore hardness-rated products, which are described by the elastomer hardness but do not specify direct spring or damping behavior. Performance depends on the material, geometry, and installation conditions, which is why careful design is necessary to ensure safe and long-lasting operation.
